Chlorpyriphos 20% EC is a widely used organophosphate insecticide known for its broad-spectrum control.¹ It acts through three primary pathways: contact, stomach, and vapor (fumigant) action, making it effective against a variety of pests that chew, suck, or live in the soil.

1. Common Uses and Target Pests

• Agricultural: Controls pests like stem borers, aphids, bollworms, whiteflies, root grubs, and leaf rollers in crops such as paddy, cotton, sugarcane, and vegetables.

• Termite Control: Extensively used in both pre-construction and post-construction soil treatments to protect buildings and timber from termites.

• Soil Treatment: Often applied to the soil to target underground pests like cutworms and root grubs.

2. Recommended Dosage

3. Safety and Toxicity (Important)

Chlorpyriphos is classified as WHO Class II (Moderately Hazardous). It works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which can affect the nervous system of humans and animals.

• Symptoms of Exposure: Headache, dizziness, blurred vision, excessive sweating, and nausea.

• Precautions: Wear protective clothing (gloves, masks, and boots). Do not eat or smoke during application.

• Environmental Impact: It is highly toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates, and honey bees. Avoid spraying near water bodies or during active bee foraging.

• Antidote: Atropine and PAM (Pralidoxime) are used under medical supervision for emergency treatment.
