Ethion 50% EC is a powerful organophosphate insecticide and acaricide (miticide) used extensively in agriculture. It is most commonly known by the brand name Fosmite (manufactured by PI Industries), among others like Ethohit or Ethon Hunt.
It is an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC), meaning it is an oil-based liquid that forms a milky emulsion when mixed with water for spraying.
Ethion is primarily a contact and stomach poison. It is highly effective against:
Mites: Red spider mites, purple mites, and yellow mites.
Sucking Pests: Whiteflies, thrips, aphids, and scales.
Chewing Pests: Bollworms, pod borers, and girdle beetles.
Other: It is also used as a termiticide in buildings and wood preservation.
Note: Dosage can vary by manufacturer and specific crop conditions. Always refer to the product label.
| Crop | Target Pest | Dosage (per Acre) | Water Volume |
| Tea | Mites, Thrips, Scales | 200 ml | 200400 Liters |
| Cotton | Whiteflies, Bollworms | 600800 ml | 200400 Liters |
| Chilli | Mites, Thrips | 600800 ml | 200400 Liters |
| Soybean | Girdle beetle, Stem fly | 600 ml | 200400 Liters |
| Gram/Pigeon Pea | Pod borer | 400600 ml | 200400 Liters |
Ethion acts as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. It disrupts the nervous system of the insect or mite, leading to rapid paralysis and death. It provides a "quick knockdown" effect and has residual activity, meaning it stays effective on the leaf surface for some time.
Ethion is a highly toxic chemical (Red or Yellow label in many regions) and must be handled with extreme care:
Personal Protection: Always wear a mask, goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and full-sleeve clothing. Avoid breathing the spray mist.
Environment: It is highly toxic to fish and aquatic life. Do not use near water bodies. It is also toxic to bees; avoid spraying during active foraging hours.
Re-entry Period: Do not enter the treated field for at least 48 hours after application.
Waiting Period (PHI): The time between the last spray and harvest varies from 3 days (Tea) to 30 days (Soybean). Check your specific crop's label.
If swallowed: Seek medical help immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless told to do so by a doctor.
Skin/Eye Contact: Flush with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes.
Antidote: The specific antidote for organophosphate poisoning is Atropine Sulphate. PAM (Pralidoxime) may also be used under medical supervision.
