A silicon-based spreader, also commonly known as a silicone super-spreader or organo-silicone surfactant, is a type of adjuvant used primarily in agriculture.
Its main function is to dramatically reduce the surface tension of a spray solution (like a pesticide, herbicide, fungicide, or foliar fertilizer), which provides exceptional spreading, wetting, and penetration properties.
Super Spreading and Wetting: It allows the spray droplet to spread out into a very thin film over a large area of the plant surface, even on difficult-to-wet surfaces like waxy or hairy leaves.
Rapid Penetration: The low surface tension enables the chemical to penetrate the leaf's protective waxy cuticle or enter through the plant's stomata (tiny pores) more easily and quickly.
Enhanced Efficacy: By providing thorough, uniform coverage and improved absorption, the active ingredients in the agrochemical (like a herbicide or insecticide) become much more effective.
Rainfastness: Improved adhesion helps the chemical stick to the plant surface, reducing the chance of it being washed off by rain shortly after application.
Reduced Dosage: Because the chemical is used more efficiently and covers more area, the overall volume or amount of the original pesticide/fertilizer may sometimes be reduced, leading to cost savings and reduced environmental impact.
Activator: In addition to spreading, it often acts as an activator, increasing the biological activity of the tank-mix partner.
Silicone super-spreaders are often significantly more effective than traditional Non-Ionic Surfactants (NIS), which are the most common type of spreader/wetting agent. Silicone-based products can typically reduce the surface tension to a much lower level, resulting in coverage that can be up to 10 times better than conventional carbon-based spreaders.
While highly effective, silicone spreaders can make the spray mixture very potent. It is crucial to always follow the recommended rates and procedures on both the spreader's label and the agrochemical's label to avoid potential crop injury (phytotoxicity) or excessive runoff.
