Fipronil 5% SC is a modern, broad-spectrum insecticide belonging to the phenylpyrazole chemical family. It is widely used in agriculture for its high efficacy at low dosages and its "triple-action" property: it works via contact, ingestion, and systemic action.
Fipronil targets the central nervous system of insects. It blocks the GABA-gated chloride channels, preventing the uptake of chloride ions. This leads to excessive neurostimulation, paralysis, and eventual death of the pest.
Selective Toxicity: It is generally more toxic to insects than to humans or pets because it binds more effectively to insect nerve endings.
Phyto-tonic Effect: Many farmers note a "plant growth enhancement" (PGE) effect, where crops appear greener and show better root growth after application.
The dosage typically varies depending on the crop and the severity of the infestation.
| Crop | Target Pests | Dosage (per Acre) | Water Volume |
| Rice (Paddy) | Stem Borer, Gall Midge, Leaf Folder, BPH | 400 600 ml | 200 Liters |
| Chilli | Thrips, Aphids, Fruit Borer | 320 400 ml | 200 Liters |
| Cabbage | Diamondback Moth (DBM) | 320 400 ml | 200 Liters |
| Sugarcane | Early Shoot Borer, Root Borer | 600 800 ml | 200 Liters |
| Cotton | Aphids, Jassids, Thrips, Whitefly | 600 800 ml | 200 Liters |
Domestic Use: For small gardens or household pests like termites and ants, a common dilution is 24 ml per 1 liter of water.
Long Residual Control: Provides extended protection, reducing the need for frequent re-spraying.
Effective Against Resistant Pests: Works well against insects that have developed resistance to older classes like organophosphates or pyrethroids.
Versatile Application: Can be used as a foliar spray, soil drench, or even for seedling dipping.
Toxic to Aquatic Life: Do not use near ponds, rivers, or lakes. It is also highly toxic to honey bees, so avoid spraying during active foraging hours.
Protective Gear: Always wear gloves, a mask, and goggles. Avoid inhaling the spray mist or allowing it to touch your skin.
Waiting Period: Observe the "Pre-Harvest Interval" (PHI). For rice, it is typically 32 days; for cotton, about 7 days.
Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place, strictly away from food, children, and livestock.
