Validamycin 3% L is a specialized antibiotic fungicide primarily used in agriculture to control fungal diseases, most notably Sheath Blight in Rice (Paddy). It is derived from the fermentation of the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus and is widely favored for its safety and low toxicity.
| Feature | Details |
| Technical Name | Validamycin 3% L (Liquid) |
| Type | Antibiotic Fungicide |
| Primary Target | Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia solani) |
| Primary Crop | Rice (Paddy) |
| Mode of Action | Contact and Curative (non-systemic) |
Unlike many systemic fungicides, Validamycin acts primarily through contact. When it comes into contact with the fungus:
It inhibits the synthesis of chitin, a vital component of fungal cell walls.
It causes abnormal branching at the tips of the fungal hyphae (the "roots" of the fungus).
This halts the growth and spread of the pathogen almost immediately.
Dosage can vary slightly by brand (e.g., Sumitomo's Valida, Dhanuka's Sheathmar), but the general guidelines are:
Foliar Spray: 2 ml to 3 ml per liter of water.
Per Acre: Approximately 600 ml to 800 ml diluted in 200 liters of water.
Timing: Apply at the first sign of water-soaked lesions (Sheath Blight symptoms) or during the tillering stage. A second spray may be needed 1015 days later if humidity is high.
Curative Action: It is highly effective even after the disease has started to show symptoms.
Rainfastness: It remains effective even if it rains shortly after application.
IPM Friendly: It is safe for beneficial insects (like bees and ladybugs) and soil health, making it ideal for Integrated Pest Management.
Low Toxicity: It has low mammalian toxicity, making it safer for farmers to handle compared to harsh chemical fungicides.
[!IMPORTANT]
Always wear protective gear (gloves, masks, and goggles) when mixing and spraying.
Avoid Inhalation: Do not breathe in the spray mist; always spray in the direction of the wind.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from food, children, and animal feed.
Waiting Period: Observe a waiting period (often around 14 days) between the last spray and harvesting.
First Aid: If it contacts eyes or skin, flush with plenty of clean water for 15 minutes.
