Paraquat Dichloride 24% SL (Soluble Liquid) is a highly effective, fast-acting, non-selective contact herbicide used to control a wide range of annual grasses and broad-leaved weeds. It is frequently referred to as a "chemical plough" because it burns down green vegetation quickly without disturbing the soil.
Paraquat is extremely toxic. In many regions, it is classified as a Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP), meaning it can only be purchased and applied by certified, trained professionals.
Fatal if Swallowed: A single small sip can be fatal, and there is no specific antidote.
Safety Features: Manufacturers usually add a blue dye (to prevent confusion with beverages), a sharp odor, and an emetic (to induce vomiting) as safety measures.
Mode of Action: It is a contact herbicide. It destroys plant cell membranes and interferes with photosynthesis upon contact. It only kills the green parts of the plant it touches; it does not move to the roots, so established perennial weeds may eventually regrow.
Soil Inactivation: One of its unique features is that it becomes biologically inactive immediately upon contact with soil. This allows farmers to sow or transplant crops shortly after application without residual damage to the new seeds.
Rainfastness: It is absorbed by plant foliage very quickly, often becoming "rainfast" (resistant to being washed away) within minutes of application.
| Crop Type | Target Weeds | Typical Dosage |
| Plantations (Tea, Coffee, Rubber) | Grassy and broadleaf weeds | 0.5 1.0 Litre per acre |
| Field Crops (Rice, Wheat, Maize) | Pre-plant "burn-down" of weeds | 0.5 1.4 Litre per acre |
| Vegetables (Potato, Cotton) | Inter-row weed control | 0.3 0.8 Litre per acre |
| Aquatic | Emergent weeds in canals/ditches | As per local label |
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear a face shield or goggles, chemically resistant gloves (nitrile or butyl), long sleeves, long pants, and a respirator.
Nozzle Choice: Use a Flat Fan or Flood Jet nozzle for even coverage.
Drift Prevention: Use a spray hood when applying between crop rows to avoid "drift" (accidental spray) onto the desirable crop foliage, as it will kill any green tissue it touches.
Mixing: Use clean water. Avoid using muddy or brackish water, as soil particles in the water can deactivate the chemical before it reaches the weeds.
