Metsulfuron Methyl 20% WP is a highly potent, selective, and systemic post-emergence herbicide. It belongs to the sulfonylurea family and is widely known for its "ultra-low" application rates.
Below is a breakdown of its usage, application, and safety.
Mode of Action: It is an ALS (Acetolactate Synthase) inhibitor. It stops the production of essential amino acids, which halts cell division and causes the weeds to stop growing within 48 hours, eventually drying up completely within 12 weeks.
Systemic Nature: The chemical is absorbed through both foliage (leaves) and roots, moving throughout the plant to ensure the entire weed, including the roots, is controlled.
Low Dosage: One of its standout features is that it requires very small amounts (grams per acre) compared to traditional herbicides.
| Crop | Target Weeds | Dosage (per Acre) | Water Volume |
| Wheat | Broadleaf weeds (e.g., Chenopodium album, Vicia sativa) | 8 grams | 150200 Liters |
| Rice (Transplanted) | Sedges & broadleaf weeds (e.g., Cyperus iria, Ludwigia) | 8 grams | 150200 Liters |
| Sugarcane | General broadleaf weeds and some grasses | 12 grams | 200250 Liters |
Note: For domestic gardens or small nurseries, the typical dilution is roughly 1 gram per 10 liters of water.
Timing: * Wheat: Apply 2535 days after sowing (post-emergence).
Rice: Apply 510 days after transplanting.
Soil Moisture: Ensure there is sufficient moisture in the soil at the time of application for the herbicide to be effective.
Surfactant: In many cases (especially in wheat), adding a non-ionic surfactant (like "Spreadex" or similar) helps the chemical stick to and penetrate the weed leaves better.
Rain-fastness: It is generally rain-fast within 4 hours of application.
Intercropping: Do not use if the main crop is intercropped with broadleaf plants like Mustard, Sunflower, or Pulses, as it will kill them.
Residual Effect: It has a residual effect in the soil. Be cautious about the "follow crop"sensitive crops like sugar beets or certain vegetables shouldn't be planted immediately after a metsulfuron-treated crop.
Aquatic Safety: It is highly toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. Do not use near water bodies or allow runoff to enter ponds.
Personal Safety: Always wear gloves and a mask. Avoid inhalation of the spray mist.
